Conclusion of the web design

“ Anything that is a great print design is likely to be a lousy web design.”
Sated by Nielsen (1999) expressed the difference between the two media that
it is necessary to take different design approaches to employ the strengths of
each medium and minimize its weaknesses.

Moreover, as Nielsen (1999) cited that the web is all about the elements
moving around, instead of text and graphic designed on print, a web design
can consist more elements to make it more attractive by the moving
graphics, sounds, animations or radio clips placing…etc.

Although the print might attract the reader with the high impact
visualization, but the online media is believed to be successful in the
interactivity with the users. It is because the web needs the user’s
engagement since it can show the moving images under the user
control and it can allow the user to manipulate the interactive interface.

Additionally, as the CTHealthy Policy Org (2001) states that in order to provide a healthy reading mode, there should be lots of white space and at least using 12 point font to make the print to be more readable.

Nevertheless, the hypertext navigation is a core element of the web
design that they show how is the appearance of links look like, it lead
the users to click and to go to the page they wish to and also, the
information architecture of the web as well.

Weblog Usability

Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox for 17 October 2005 is Weblog Usability: The Top Ten Design Mistakes. In other words, it’s a top-ten list of things not to do on your blog if you care about usability.

Since I care about usability, it's time for me test my own weblog against Jakob’s top-ten list.
Let’s see:

Top Ten Weblog Usability Mistakes

1)No author biography : yes. please check from my profile.

2)No author photo: yes! I was wearing a school uniform. ^^

3)Nondescript posting titles: Pass. I generally give my posts informative titles .Only rarely do I use cutesy titles where readers are forced to guess what the post is about.

4)Links don’t say where they go: Pass. As a reader, I find “click here” links to be annoying, and so I avoid the practice in my writing.

5)Classic hits are buried: Pass. . My posts are organized by topic as well as by date. Further, the ever-present live search makes finding posts by content easy.

6)The calendar is the only navigation: Pass. My posts are organized by topic as well as by date. Further, the ever-present live search makes finding posts by content easy.

7)Irregular publishing frequency: Fail. I don’t have a regular posting schedule. When work are heavy..i dont post much.

8)Mixing topics: Semi-Pass. I do mix up topics somewhat, but almost all of my topics fall into the category of "Weblog Design".

9)Forgetting that you write for your future boss: Pass. I don’t think there is anything on my blog that a future employer would find troubling or even unprofessional. (Since I am a student only, and so far none of them seem to mind what I post. My blog now I am writing is for my assignment & sharing with my classmates.)

10)Having a domain name owned by a weblog service: Pass. My blog’s home is blogspot.com, which seems like the natural place for it.

How to judge a good web page?

“The areas where users looked the most are colored red; the yellow areas indicate fewer views, followed by the least-viewed blue areas. Gray areas didn't attract any fixations.”
Nielson (2006) cites that there are 79% of people use to scan the information on the internet while 15% of people read the content on web word-by-word. Moreover, reading from a computer screen is usually 25% slower than from printed document and so, the web content should be 50% the size of its paper equivalent.

Regarding to those data, how should we judge a web page is good or bad?
Let’s take a look of the short hints:

The Scannability:
- Is there any keywords which can attract me and impress me at once?
- Any headings and subheadings to make the content more clear?
- Any bulleted lists?
- Is the content distribute in the inverted pyramid style?
- How about the outbound hypertext links?

The Credibility:

- Is the web using high quality graphics to make it more impressive?
- Is it a good-writing web?
- Any use of the outbound hypertext links?
- Is that a updated web pages?

The Readability:

As argued by Nielsen (2006), the dominant reading behavior follows an F shape: a first horizontal movement, a second horizontal movement a bit below, and a vertical scan on the left, and it is quite consistent over several different types of web pages and tasks.

Weblog's benefits

Weblog is a popular way to share the life with friends nowaday and it is interesting to take a look of the benefits bringing by the weblog as I am one of the blogger as well.

Comparing with writing a dairy, writing (or should be define as typing) blog is far more interesting that we can edit the layout, the setting, the font and every design on the web or even upload any photos or videos that we want to share with others.

Suggesed by Nielson(2005) that one of the weblog's great benefit is that it essentially free the user from "Web Design", for example, You write a paragraph, click a button, and it's posted on the Internet. No need for visual design, page design, interaction design, information architecture, or any programming or server maintenance.

Weblogs' second benefit is that they're a web-native content genre that we can simply find something interesting on another site and link to it, possibly with commentary or additional examples. Obviously, this is much easier than running a conventional site, and again indicates the benefits of lowering the barriers to computer use.

Moreover, weblog acts as a great communication platform that we can share everything to everyone at everytime through posting the content onto the web and it is really sharpen up the connection between people, it may also acts as a business tool to expand the people's network via the internet.

Impressive advertisement of Johnnie Walker

Located at Miden Avenue, the Johnnie Walker Whisky's advertisement caught my eye at once.

Miden Avenue is a well-know "Alcoholic Place" in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon that many people go there for happy hour and chill with friends, the billboard advertisement was really big that it even occupied 15th floors height of a building and it was located at the main entriance of Miden Avenue.

The background color was sharp enough to highlight the product, the advertisement is really success to draw the peoples' attention that it contains no special texual and which made people more focus on the product shoot itself.

According to Kress(1996), "One is obvious to anyone who looks at a computer screen: the visual is there, and the possibilities even of producing written text focus on visual aspects- font-types much more so than did the former technology of typewriters and typesetting, most of the audiences would like to enjoy the internet media more than the traditional media because of the interaction. By looking at the screen and clicking the mouse, the users and the audiences would tend to an "F" shape pattern as the previos post mentioned before.

Johnnie Walker's Website is an innovative webpage that involve users interaction with the computer and as one of the promotion item for its brand as well.

By clicking into the the Johnnie Walker's Website, users may click on those advertisement / TV Commerical their own.
